FDF #017: Show Me A Man's Friends

My grandfather always used to tell me,

"Show me a man's friends and I'll show you the man."

And now that we've got kids of our own and we've got decades of parenting-years under our belt...

That message keeps coming back to me.

Show me a man's friends and I'll show you the man.

It is so true and it is so powerful.

The community that we participate in, that we create, that we allow into our lives shapes us.

It shapes our beliefs.

It shapes our thoughts.

It shapes our actions.

It shapes our habits.

It shapes our results.

So that community has a lot of power.

That community, in fact, is going to dictate some of our outcomes.

Now does this mean that it is impossible for you to achieve your health and fitness goals, even if no one around you is prioritizing it?

No, it doesn't mean that.

But it does mean that it's going to be harder.

It does mean that it's going to reduce your likelihood of consistent success.

It does mean that you are going to have to swim upstream to some extent.

Does it make it impossible?


Does it make it improbable?


So you should take note of who you surround yourself with...who you spend time with... Who you act like.

You should take note of your close friends.

You should take note of your coworkers.

You should take note of your family members.

And make sure that the community that you are a part of, is the community that's going to get you where you want to go...

Is the community that is supporting you towards your achievements...

Is the community that's going to put goodness into your life, put positivity into your life...

Is going to grow you as a person...

That's going to challenge you in a good way.

You want to make sure that you are surrounding yourself with people who you want to be more like.

And in turn you are being someone who they want to be more like.

Your community, just like your zip code, can determine a lot about the future of your life.

Your community is going to determine a lot about the future of your life.

Make sure you are surrounding yourself with a community of people who care about your health...

Who care about your fitness.

Who care about your attitude.

Who care about your mindset.

Who care about your legacy.

Who care about how you're parenting your kids.

Who care about what they're watching.

Who care about what they're putting into their bodies and into their minds.

And look, sometimes it's hard.

Maybe it's easy when we're all still in school growing up.

Maybe it's easy if you're in college or grad school.

Maybe it's easy through your church.

You know, these days with the internet, social media, and all of the communication tools at our fingertips.... You can find that community online.

But I want to encourage you to be very, very intentional with building your community.

I want to challenge you to always be thinking about how you can up-level your community, and up-level yourself.


This week I want you to think about this...

Who in your life is inspiring you? Inspiring you to be a better man?

And who in your life is tempting you? To be your worst self?

Think about what boundaries you can establish.

And what channels you can open up to make sure that you're getting good inputs... To make sure that you're minimizing the bad inputs.

To make sure that you have a community that is supporting you towards your health and fitness goals.

Whether that's online... you might be in one of our coaching programs or courses or Facebook groups.

It might be with another online program.

It might be a church,

It might be at work,

It might be friends from high school,

It might be your neighbor,

It might be a local gym.

Whatever it is...

Get involved, engage, plug-in with the community.

Join the community that is inline with your goals.

Be part of the community that builds the legacy you want to live today... and the legacy you want to leave tomorrow.
